Meet Etienne, our student of the month and a bright young student at the MBA Center who got selected into HEC Paris for an MBA program. We had a quick interview session with him recently, and in this article, we will be revealing it all for the applicants who are applying for the same to help them on the road to their graduate school. Well, let us first find out a bit about Etienne. He has expertise in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, computational fluid dynamics, CATIA, aerodynamics, leadership, etc. He got his bachelor's degree in electromechanical engineering from Ecole Polytechnique de Bruxelles, followed by a master's in aeronautical (aerospace engineering) from Polytechnique Montréal with another master's from Ecole Polytechnique de Bruxelles in the same field. He also did an advanced master's from ISAE-SUPAERO in aircraft propulsion. He worked for some time in the aerospace industry as an engineer before applying for a master's to broaden his knowledge and enter the business world. He speaks French, German, and English. In his interview with us, he recently talked about his journey to graduate school, so if you want to find out about his journey so far, look at the section below!

Could you please introduce yourself?

Hello everyone, my name is Etienne, and I got accepted to HEC Paris for an MBA program. I have worked in several technology companies like Safran Aircraft Engines, LuxairGroup, etc. I enjoy working on highly technical subjects, and I am interested in all the dimensional parts you can find in a company. This interest is one of the reasons that I applied for a master's.

Could you tell us something about your past work experience as you have a very different and interesting background?

I am a rocket scientist because I have studied various space programs. And in my work experience, I work as an engineer in the aircraft department. Today, my work is divided between the technical aspects of engineering, but I am also involved in an airline company's budget and maintenance costs.

Why an MBA?

I never thought about having an MBA before working. In my career, I have worked with all the technical aspects of the company, but I recognised that I am getting more and more involved in the business aspect of the company.

If you don’t have a business background, is it tough to get there? What is your experience?

From my experience, it's not essential to have a business background before applying for an MBA. You can still apply for an MBA regardless of your background. It might be easy for people with the same background, but it's not a requirement.

How did you balance your time between preparing for the GMAT and the work simultaneously?

It's simple. You need to be strict with your day-to-day work, and only you would be able to do that. I used to start my work in the early morning and prepare for the GMAT in the evening for two hours. On weekends, I prepare for 3-4 hours.

What advice would you like to give to the applicants?

Start your preparation early, especially when you are working as well. Take the help of professionals if you are facing difficulties as it's a significant investment. Having good recommendation letters and preparing well for the GMAT is essential.
